FALL/WINTER 2012

Jonathan Harris

DRIVING WITH BEATRICE

“I say the sky is upside down
and the clouds are fish
because the world is round.”

Beatrice in the back seat
leans forward
as we roll on down the street.

“That one there is a barracuda
underneath it
a blowfish fat as Buddha.”

I catch her in the rearview
sipping from a cup
encrusted in lipstick and goo.

She says, “Speak a little louder.
I just fished
my hearing aid out of the chowder.”
