SEFERIS AT HYDRA

This volcanic
fang rears steps to history
white staircase to history
kings, phalanx of tides
drown to white stone.  

a birdless silence
the white words rinse stone
grave their pure iris s
eats the liquid agony  

until the lizard
reflected in wave
becomes fossil.
