and the sea ripples over pebbles
                like a wave of warm applause
for an event that has been running
                longer than we can remember

when our voices spiralled
                from nacreous casings
amniotic water lulling us
                from one being into another

and perhaps we felt the push of waves
                birth us onto a somewhere shore
actors changing role
                rattling among stones

our mother unaware
                of her performance
