ZOO

if there is such a thing
as the ghost of history,
the jackal who fasts
until he sees what he wants
then I hope he has seen me
walking through Ituri Forest,
seen me turn around,
smile at the hippopotamus


MARINA RUBIN is associated poetry editor of Mudfish Magazine in New York.
