THE NAMING OF THE ANIMALS

Beasts stand in long lines ‘neath the flow’ring trees:
Greyskin, longnose, bigfoot, furtoes, waiting
To be named—made real. Thus have come all these.

A man beneath the trees sits, dictating:
“You are elephant and tapir, duck, cat.”
These words, a nature for each creating.

The beasts go, frolicking ‘neath the blue matte
Sky. The man sits back, alone, and he sighs.
All those beasts, and none like him to look at.
