Ellington’s ink is still wet,
black dots across
5 lines, across white,
when he asks me
to copy all the parts.

*Along with playing trombone, Juan Tizol also composed and served as musical score copier for the Duke Ellington band.


Poet Laureate of Kansas (2017-2019), Kevin Rabas teaches at Emporia State University, where he leads the poetry and playwriting tracks. He has nine books, including Lisa’s Flying Electric Piano, a Kansas Notable Book and Nelson Poetry Book Award winner.
