WINTER 2007

Charles Fishman
BIRTHDAY POEM FOR NERUDA

Sapsucker in wild cherries
raps out Morse   after a buzzsaw
cantata

ripple of water pulls soft breezes
after it

leaves           in the highest branches
riffle in a prayer circle   of sky

spirea whispers its secrets
in the hummed eloquence
of bees

lilies speak in the ancient
language:
fragrance   and color

blood rushes through
existence: your blood
