LONG ISLAND BYWAYS |
On this, an island
held together by a web of highways
watch the passing of the needle, see the
threads drawn tightly, pulling patterns into place
stitching patches of differing life styles
together, perpetually joining cloths of many cultures
to form new patterns
ride from Brooklyn to Shinnecock Bay
as the Belt stretches northeast to sunrise
retain some reservations
while piecing a patch of Hampton riches
to appliqué over a square of native poverty
then, ride the highway to Shelter Island
pass trailer parks, watch the texture of life’s fabric
change at each and every exit
of the long long island’s expressway
observe how the ever changing
ribbons of color tie the ends together
pave the road to flashier threads
try not to ignore the threadbare patches
as you pass them by on the heavily traveled
road to success.
