Charlene Knadle

KEEPING UP

Behind him the shower doors
hold a patina of steam.
He stands at the mirror
patting his neck with Canoe
admiring the pecs
he enhances with raised fists
and a slight turning,
puts on his shirt
and selects a tie.

Down the hall his mate
sets her elegant legs
into the top of a long gown
lifts it to her shoulders
adds a lacy jacket,
taking care not to disturb
her makeup. A necklace,
a bit of perfume, extra ring,
an ankle bracelet--
these and a last glance
confirm her readiness.

Tonight the Joneses
are puttin' on the dog.
