Robert Savino

ALTAR BOY

I left God at the altar.
Ignorance was not for me to know.
I knew more than that . . . I thought.

I was a juvenile ruffian
turned peace advocate
waving signs to stop the war

then snapped and enlisted to serve
where I met those wiser than me,
beefed up respect . . . beat down egos

shipped out in a tin can
across conflicted seas
for better or worse

and there was God, again
everywhere.
He guided my way home.
