WINTER 2005

David Lawrence
THE MASK IN THE MUSEUM

Drenching has nothing to do with the rain.
The rain is sandstone,
It dries you off like a statue
When it evaporates.

I am turning into a statue.
My legend is becoming solid.

The museum
Will be open twenty-four hours a day
But I will be the only one
With a ticket.
I sacrifice my life to stare into my mask.

David Lawrence has published more than three hundred poems in North American Review, Nimrod, Pearl, Cortland Review, Confrontation, Mudfish, Hayden's Ferry Review, Barbaric Yawp, Chiron Review, Penthouse, etc. Three of his poetry books were finalists in Colorado Review Poetry Prize, Alice James Poetry Prize and Blue Lynx Prize competition. Published books: Blame It On The Scientists (Pudding House Publications, 02); Dementia Pugilistica (Mudfish's Individual Poet Series, 99); Steel Toe Boots (Fithian Press, 96).
