Fall/Winter 2016

Catherine Ayres

PRETENDING

Just before waking there’s a taper of light
My kitchen is a nest of bleeps and wide mouths
Swallows fall from my eyes
The sink gags
I clear the morning but my calves are spattered
Today the sun ripened raindrops on the window
and when I tilted my head they filled the tree
At night I leaf through wide skies and hospital wards
I sleep with myself. We don’t touch.
