FALL 2007

Penelope Shuttle |
LOVER WHO NEVER WAS |
Everyone has had me,
the lover who never was -
I arrange to meet you nowhere,
and I’m always late -
I never write, I never phone
Be honest, that’s the way you like it
I’m so perfect,
I’ll never get over myself,
and nor will you -
So much sleep gets lost over me,
I wonder how the world copes,
dead-tired every morning,
needing me to make everything okay,
more than okay,
to bring about a happy ending -
What happy ending
|

Penelope Shuttle lives in Cornwall, in the far west of England, by the sea. REDGROVE'S WIFE was shortlisted for the Forward Prize, and has just been short-listed for the T S Eliot Prize. Her SELECTED POEMS are available from CARCANET PRESS, UK.
