I entered St. Sulpice as Mass was ending.
The organ sang a hymn of affirmation,
the church, a holy vessel, filled with sound.
A sojourner in a sea of faith, I walked the nave
to Mendelssohn at his most sublime.
Felix, the baptized son, hailed as the new Bach,
Abraham, the father who fled the synagogue,
Moses, the grandfather who led the Jews
to the promised land of German culture —
time would prove them wrong.
