Winter 2019/20

Kevin Rabas

Some 100
   out that day, not
quite cool at 9
   at night, and Abby
fans herself in 3
   with a green
ostrich plume,
   and she sings
“Darn that Dream,”
   her high icy
cry like cubes
in whiskey, like
   how you might
worship the window unit
right when you arrive
   shirt off, hands
on either side.

Poet Laureate of Kansas (2017-2019), Kevin Rabas teaches at Emporia State University, where he leads the poetry and playwriting tracks. He has twelve books, including Lisa’s Flying Electric Piano, a Kansas Notable Book and Nelson Poetry Book Award winner.
