WINTER 2005

Hal Sirowitz

THE SPEED OF SOUND

Father said if he could
drive his car faster
than the speed of sound,
then my mother's nagging --
'Slow down, you're
endangering our lives' --
would only reach him
after he had stopped.
But by that time it wouldn't
mean much. It'd be too late
to do anything about it.

Hal Sirowitz went to Long Beach High School before Billy Crystal did. Three of his poetry books have been translated into Finnish, but he still can't understand that language. He has poems in Garrison Keillor's 'Good Poems' and Billy Collins''Poetry 180.'
